Centre of England Group

Riding for the Disabled Association

Volunteer

At Centre of England RDA, we have about 30 volunteers but always welcome new volunteers with all levels of experience.

As well as volunteering with the riding sessions we have social events through the year; outings, Christmas Parties, Picnics etc, it’s a great way to get to make new friends.

Do I need to know about horses?

Experience with horses is useful but not essential, as long as you feel comfortable around horses, full training is given.

Volunteer

What does a volunteer do?

At each session you can help as a leader or side walker. The leader is responsible for leading and controlling the horse. A side walker walks next to the rider to always ensure their safety. This may involve helping with balance, providing reassurance, ensuring they listen to the instructor, are getting the most out of the session and ultimately enjoying themselves. Each rider has one or two side-walkers depending on their ability.

Do volunteers receive training?

All training is to standards laid down by RDA National Office. Regular training sessions are held to keep our volunteers up to date with procedures, rider progress & legislation. Each volunteer has an individual training log & there is always a qualified RDA Instructor around if you need assistance or advice. Training in Safeguarding and First Aid are also provided.

Our Volunteers

Are there any requirements?

All volunteers are required to complete a Volunteer Application form and pass the Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) check. To help with a riding session you need to be able to walk briskly with the rider for up to an hour at a time.

When & where are the riding lessons held?

Our riding sessions are all held at Lowlands Equestrian Centre on Thursday afternoons at 12.00, 12.30 and 1pm.

Do I have to be available to come along every week, to all sessions?

No, you can volunteer for as much or as little time as you have free. The Volunteer Co-ordinator arranges the leaders and side walkers each week dependant on volunteer availability.

Are you insured?

The Group has Public Liability Insurance for both its volunteers and riders.
